A MAN attacked a teenager after his character was killed on a violent online computer war game, a court heard.

Mark Bradford, aged 46, grabbed the boy around the throat when he called him names during Call of Duty, Plymouth magistrates heard.

The pair were in their homes playing on their PlayStations and speaking on microphones over the internet, the court was told.

Bradford, of Cardinal Avenue, St Budeaux, admitted assaulting the boy by beating on July 1.

Gareth Warden, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the boy was at home playing the war simulation game on his console with some friends.

Bradford, who was in his own flat, was playing with them and controlling his own character on screen.

Mr Warden said: "Mr Bradford was killed during the game and the boy called him a name."

He added that Bradford went to the boy's address, walked into the front room and grabbed him around the throat with both hands.

The court heard he was pulled off by the boy's mum and walked away without saying a word.

Mr Warden said the boy was left with a small scratch and some reddening to the neck.

He added Bradford admitted the offence to police and said he did not know what he was doing.

Tracey Baker, for Bradford, said he 'just lost it' and the attack was not planned. She said that he was provoked by the name-calling and also had mental health issues.

Magistrates ordered a probation officer to prepare a full report on his background before he is sentenced.

He was released on unconditional bail to return to court on October 24.

“I dunno about games, but violent TV shows and films must certainly be responsible for making kids grow up thinking violence is part and parcel of everyday life, heck what kind of sick society we must be to think it 'entertainment' to watch stuff like 'Midsomer Murders', 'Murder She wrote', 'Murder on the Orient Express' plus dozens of similar crime shows day in day out?”

    “@ChrisOPrayse

No doubt you can cite the peer-reviewed studies which show that to be the case...?

I very much doubt it, as there are currently no such studies which have stood up to any kind of proper scrutiny. There are many (some would say "informed") opinions, but opinions are no more evidence than a two-page spread in the Daily Mail is, which is where yours seem to have originated.”

“As for chess (which bores me), its always been one of the most violent games around because when an enemy piece moves in for the kill, you're dead meat with no chance to retreat or fire back.
At least with computer wargames you can use tactics and cunning to take cover etc, and even the military use computer simulations nowadays to teach the art of war..:)”

“If people go ballistic when they take a beating on the computer, they shouldn't play.
Heck, i lost 15 out of my first 16 CM Normandy games earlier this season but staged a sensational comeback to climb to the top of a worldwide league table (as Poor Old Spike)..:)”

“What was the mother doing letting a 13 year old play an 18-certificate game? Top parenting there.

I can only assume DrDoctorX is trolling, as there is no other reason to spout such ill-informed and ignorant rubbish. If the video game was to blame, this would be an everyday occurrence.

A small fraction of society is violent and some of them play video games. Video games do not make people violent, regardless of what you may read in the Daily Mail. Still, it's easier to blame a piece of software than accept that society produces people with violent tendencies and always has done.

This was a violent episode triggered by a 13 year old spouting abuse at somebody (with mental health issues) that he knew, in order to provoke a reaction.

    Well, he got one.”
