AN angler has been taken to hospital after a shark lashed out at him, puncturing his arm causing him to bleed heavily.

The 39-year-old local man was fishing two miles south of the Mewstone Rock when the incident happened at around 12.50pm.

He had been on the 18-foot Shetland day angler called Betty Boop with two other men.

He is believed to have landed a spur dog, a small deep water shark with a sharp spine on the dorsal fin.

Dave Milford, Plymouth Lifeboat coxswain who went out to recover the man, said: "He'd brought it on board the boat and had been taking the hook out when the spine punctured his right fore arm.

"There was a lot of blood – it looked like it could have punctured an artery. An injury like that is very uncommon."

After receiving a call from the boat, the Plymouth lifeboat attended the scene, bandaged the injured man's arm and took off the boat.

The Plymouth coastguard team got him ashore at the lifeboat station ay Millbay and he was taken to Derriford Hospital by ambulance.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“I once saw a yobbish angler stamping on the head of an eel to kill it in front of tourists (including kids), maybe it was a mate of the shark and the shark was giving payback”
