FOOTBALLING legends who have played for Manchester United are to face a team of Plymouth Argyle veterans at Home Park this summer

Manchester United Legends will take on Argyle's own Legends side on Saturday, May 26.

The match forms the centre-piece of a weekend of events organised by the Argyle Green Taverners supporters' group.

Also on the agenda is a Golf Day at the China Fleet Country Club and a gala dinner, both of which fans will be able to experience alongside the Old Trafford stars.

Details of the two-day May extravaganza were revealed at China Fleet this morning, at a joint press conference staged by Argyle, the Green Taverners and Argyle Legends.

The weekend starts with a Golf Day on Friday, May 25, when teams of three will be joined by a United or Argyle Legend for a round at China Fleet, in Saltash.

That will be followed by a Sponsors Dinner, hosted by comedian - and ex-Argyle player Paul Boardman - at which guests will have the opportunity to sit on a table with a Legend and take part in a Questions & Answers session.

The following day - Saturday 26 - sees an action-packed day of events, starting with pre-match entertainment in the Tribute Business Lounge, for people who are sponsoring the game or would like to enjoy a pre-match meal, and the Green Taverners' Suite, which will be hosing one of its much-loved FanFests.

The game between Argyle Legends and Manchester United Legends kicks off at 1pm, after which the players will join the sponsors in the Boardroom and the Tribute Lounge.

Later, there will be hot-buffet dinner in the Green Taverners' Suite, where former Argyle player Chris Hargreaves will interview the Legends. There will also be entertainment from Paul Boardman, Rick O'Shay and Dave Banana, as well as photo and signing opportunities with the Legends, and a great raffle and auction.

Profits from the weekend will be used predominantly to accelerate payments to staff

Match tickets will go on sale from March 1, priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children.

Details for sponsorship packages will be made available shortly on the Green Taverners' website, www.greentaverners.co.uk; if you would like information about sponsorship opportunities before then, please email gtsponsorship@gmail.com.

Argyle, the GTs and the Argyle Legends would like to thank the following companies, who have already committed to supporting the Legends' weekend: St Austell Brewery, Specialist Vehicles, Bond Timber, Multi-Trode, Ginsters, Western Electrical, LTC Specialist Scaffolding and China Fleet.

“Mr. Long. This is just my personal opinion, but my belief is that the Green Taverners are raising funds to help bring a faster conclusion to the payment of money owed to the staff after the recent debacle, which was none of James Brent's making. The staff and James Brent have agreed a process for payment of wages owed, and although not perfect, better than nothing. What the Taverners are doing has my support, and I hope, many other supporters of Plymouth Argyle.'
Sincerely and without prejudice. Stan. Hartley.”
