Mariner tight-lipped on starting role for Bolasie

ARGYLE head coach Paul Mariner is keeping his cards close to his chest about whether winger Yannick Bolasie will start against Bristol City tonight.

Bolasie (pictured right) made his full debut for the Pilgrims in the 1-1 draw with Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday.

Mariner described the performance of the fleet-footed 20-year-old as "absolutely fantastic."

But he has refused to confirm that Bolasie will be in Argyle's starting line-up at Home Park this evening.

Mariner replied "maybe" when asked whether Bolasie would be in the side against Bristol City.

He added: "You have got to be careful with young players. They do tend to be up and down.

"I'm not saying Yala (Bolasie) is going to be up and down. But, from experience, young players have a flying game and then they tend to have a drop off in performance.

"We will study Bristol City a little closer and then make assessments on that."

Bolasie has made one start and four substitute appearances for Argyle.

But the only time he has played at Home Park is when he came off the bench in the second half of the 1-1 draw with Swansea City on February 16.

Bolasie has already shown he is an exciting, but unpredictable, raw talent and it is understandable Mariner does not want to rush his development.

But, at the same time, Argyle are in desperate need of wins to have any chance of escaping relegation from the Championship.

So the chances are that Bolasie will start against Bristol City, as the Pilgrims strive for victory over their West Country rivals.

Argyle's last win at Home Park was against Derby County on January 26, when they came out on top 1-0.

Since then, they have lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion and drawn 1-1 against Swansea, Leicester City and Preston North End.

So Argyle are desperate to pick up three points tonight to boost their chances of staying up, and further damage Bristol City's prospects of a play-off spot.

Mariner said: "I'm not saying it's going to be a gung-ho approach by us, it's certainly not.

"But we are at home and we need to ignite the crowd and come out with all our guns blazing."

Striker Bradley Wright-Phillips is set to start against Bristol City after making his full debut for Argyle in the draw with Coventry.

The 25-year-old has had an injury-plagued first season with the Pilgrims, but he will now be hoping to make a major contribution to the fight for Championship survival.

Wright-Phillips played for 74 minutes at the Ricoh Arena before he was substituted and replaced by 18-year-old Joe Mason for the closing stages of the game.

Mariner said: "He seems to have come through it okay."

The introduction of Mason saw Bolasie move into a central striking role, and that tactic almost paid off.

Bolasie almost scored with a sweetly-struck volley in stoppage time, but it was inadvertently blocked by team-mate Jamie Mackie.

Mariner thought moving Bolasie inside from the right wing had worked out well.

He said: "We just thought that if Jamie got a flick, or a ball was played through, his pace might get onto it."

ARGYLE'S 18-year-old former England youth international striker Liam Head has signed on loan for Tiverton Town until April 24.

Head could make his debut for Tiverton in their away game against Chippenham Town in the Southern League Premier Division tonight.

He has made two starts and five substitute appearances for Argyle's reserves this season, and scored one goal.

Head has not featured in a matchday squad for the Pilgrims at first team level.

“Ashley wasn't recalled. He asked to come back because he thinks Paul Buckle is a buffoon. And you know what ? He's right.”

“Does anyone know why we recalled Ashley Barnes early from his loan spell at Torquay?

He didn't score while he was there and we seem to have a surplus of strikers who can't score.

He didn't make the bench at Coventry and probably won't tonight so why not let Torquay keep paying his wages (Or at least part).

We really need a win tonight, I'll be there cheering them on, but I suspect I might be lonely!
