Match was not a dress rehearsal
A FUNDRAISING appeal got a kick out of seeing grown men dressed as women – to the tune of several thousand pounds.
Nearly 40 people signed up to play a game of football in memory of eight- year-old David Phillimore, who lost his fight with a rare form of cancer last year.
The men's side were asked to play in women's clothes, while the women's side could wear football strips.
As a result of the match, which was followed by a fundraising evening at Home Park's Far Post Club, thousands of pounds are expected to have been raised.
Debbie Gregory, David's mother, said: "I wanted to raise money for the children's ward at Derriford Hospital because they were so good to David.
"I just wanted to give something back to say thank-you."
David, from Yeo Close, Efford, died after an eight-month battle against osteosarcoma, which is diagnosed in about 30 youngsters each year.
The cross-dressing men won the football match on penalties after drawing 5-5 after extra time.
