Medical drama inspired by city doctors
PLAY, books, films, TV soaps – anything with a medical background or setting always draws a great deal of interest.
Treatments range over every style, from comedy plays like Doctor In The House, inspired by a naval doctor's experiences, and seen last week at the Theatre Royal, to serious examinations of medical matters, like the stunning 2401 Objects, which centred on a man with severe epilepsy and his associated neuro-surgery, which played at the Drum Theatre three weeks ago.
Another true medical story runs next week, again in the Drum, when Tristan Sturrock appears in Mayday Mayday. Son of Ewart Sturrock, founder of Sterts Arts Centre at Liskeard, who are presently fully engaged in their multi-faceted summer season, Tristan has been associated on and off with feted Cornish company Kneehigh for 25 years. He has also appeared at the National Theatre in Tristan and Yseult.
He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in one of their Plymouth seasons, and he has appeared in numerous television programmes, including Wycliffe, The Bill, Holby City and Doc Martin.

His theatrical life might have ended in 2004. At Padstow he fell off a wall and broke his neck. Told he might never walk again, he was determined to prove the specialists wrong.
Three days after the operation at Derriford Hospital he was sitting up, a week later he was standing, and within three months he was raring to go home. Now he has fully resumed his theatre career, and tells his incredible story in his one man play Mayday Mayday.
In it he recounts how the accident nearly caused his death, how he dealt with the paralysis, and how a brilliant surgeon engineered his recovery. This poignant and gently humorous tale runs at the Drum Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday next week.
