A LOCAL mental health charity is looking for people to raise vital funds for them by donning their Lycra and trainers.

Plymouth and District Mind offers support to people who suffer from a range of mental health problems in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

Mind has been in Plymouth for 26 years and due to funding cuts is looking for volunteers to help it raise the funds it needs to carry on its vital work.

The charity is looking to challenge people who are thinking of running in the Plymouth Half Marathon on April 28 to run for them.

“Fair comment, soultoucher. The coalition's policy on mental health seems to be to make life unnecessarily difficult and hope that victims top themselves... and the previous mob wasn't much better.

One small point, though: according to their website, Plymouth MIND is funded by Plymouth City Council. I'd be quite interested to know whether that funding has been cut recently!”

    “@nevman
    I stand corrected thankyou.

I agree with you about the huge joke that this government call 'mental health care', and also I'm dissappointed that MIND are having to charge a weekly amount for a safe place to chat.
However, a charity is what they are and as such, not funded by the government. They are Nationwide and have helped a lot of people over the years.
Rather than blame them for trying to raise funds, blame the government for their total lack of concern for patients of mental illness who are victims of neglect under the 'care in the community' fiasco. Scatter ill people around rough estates and leave them to it.
The Government should be funding drop-in-centres where the vulnerable can chat and have a cup of coffee, to a lot of ill people these sort of places are a life-line, in fact the Government should be providing a whole package of care for the mentally ill, but they simply don't care enough.”

“Just checked with my source: seems the charge will be £2/week for using the Oasis centre, although apparently people "in serious need of help" will not be turned away. Unfortunately, for some this is their only social contact, so if they can't afford it they're likely to end up in serious need of help. What the hell happened to prevention being better than cure?

Mental healthcare in this country is a disgrace, and charging the sick and disabled just to sit and have a chat isn't exactly helping.”

    “@knucklehead - I'm informed that it's in the pipeline.
@soultoucher - it's a charity whose board seems more concerned with its continued existence than providing essential service to its clients. As for being a charity, don't forget these service users are suffering from hardship already.”

    “@Nevman
I'm pretty sure there's no payment to use their drop in centre..there are some workshops and courses they run that require nominal payment, but that covers the costs of employing trained teachers. Don't forget they're a charity.”

“Would that be the Plymouth Mind which is now charging the mentally ill to use its drop-in centre?”
