Mentors for city's young jobseekers are wanted
INSPIRATIONAL business leaders are being sought to mentor young unemployed people.
Plymouth City Council is looking for "successful and motivated" people with practical and businesses skills to inspire and support young people struggling to find work.
The council has teamed up with the Whiz Kidz club for young entrepreneurs to develop a "unique approach" to mentoring which offers up to 20 hours of free training to business people so they can learn the skills needed to mentor youngsters.
The new mentor programme is aimed at enthusiastic people, with both life and professional skills who can offer knowledge and experience that would benefit 16- to 25-year-olds looking for work.

Councillor Nicky Williams, Cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: "We need inspirational people with practical skills to boost a young person's chances of finding work, of learning more about work life and what employers are looking for. As a city we are stepping up a gear and working out how we can help create jobs and provide practical support for our young people – by being part of this scheme, you could literally help to change a young person's life with the benefit of your wisdom and experience."
The Volunteer Mentor programme is being led by the Council's Education, Learning and Family Support department, and delivered by Plymouth Adult Community Learning Service (PACLS) and Whiz Kidz, the out-of-school business club run at the council's City Business Park in Stoke.
Whiz Kidz has already successfully supported young people into employment and self-employment through various initiatives.
This mentoring programme is supported by Jobcentre Plus Flexible Support grant funding.
The Volunteer Mentor course begins on September 20 and briefing sessions to explain more about the programme will take place tomorrow at the City Business Park, from 12.30pm to 1pm, and on September 26 at Millfields Trust's HQ Business Centre, from 1pm to 1.30pm.
To book onto one of the mentor briefing sessions call City Business Park on 01752 306000.
