Minister's applause for city services support group
A PIONEERING Plymouth-based support service for the families of service personnel is seeing its work rolled out across the country.
A seven-strong group from the award-winning Friends and Families of Deployed Units, which meets at Crownhill and Plymstock, travelled to Westminster on Monday courtesy of First Great Western to meet Defence Minister Bill Rammell to tell him about their project.
The visit coincided with International Women's Day.
The informal group, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, provides help and advice for those left behind when their loved one is away on military operations or training, whether they are in the Navy, Army or RAF.
This can include practical help or emotional support for families who may feel lonely or isolated as a result of a partner's absence.
Their monthly social functions regularly attract around 300 people, and during the warmer months trips are organised to attractions in the area.
When it started up, FAFDU relied on fundraising such as raffles to pay its way.
But as it has grown and become more established, it now receives funding through the deloyment welfare package.
It has proved so successful that the group's work is now being replicated as far afield as Scotland.
Community development worker Helen Howlett, from Ivybridge, said: "Our motto is 'If they are away for more than a day come and join us'."
She added: "We are gradually raising the profile of FAFDU. When you raise the profile, demand increases.
"Our main aim is to raise the profile and roll it out in other areas."
Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton Linda Gilroy said she had been able to highlight issues raised by the group with the Commons Defence Select Committee, on which she sits.
She said: "It needs to be appreciated and supported by government."
Labour MP for Plymouth Devonport Alison Seabeck said: "I know from visits to Crownhill just how isolated some people can feel and therefore just how important FAFDU is to service families in my constituency."
