The largest independent mobility supplies shop in Plymouth is issuing a warning to the local community about buying cheap mobility aid products from overseas retailers after they have seen an increase in them breaking down and being unable to be repaired.

Sunshine Care Mobility, based in Plympton, has had a number of broken down mobility scooters brought to them, however, as they were purchased overseas and the retailer is no longer active, parts are unavailable and the equipment can't be repaired.

Alex Buxton, Manager of the Sunshine Care Mobility shop said, "We are seeing a trend in which one off overseas retailers start selling extremely cheap mobility scooters online and once they're all sold, they shut down.  The owner of the scooter then comes to us for a repair and we will do our best to help, but usually as the retailer has now closed, unfortunately we are unable to get the parts to mend the scooter.  This means that the owner has to spend out more money on a replacement."

Alex added, "Mobility aids are extremely important as in most cases they help to bring some dignity, freedom and independence back to the user, and whilst shopping around to find the right product is a very good thing, the best product is not always the cheapest.  At the shop we are always happy to have chat to offer advice so that the right product is found and money is not wasted."

“Re by haunt. you are totally correct. Every mobility scooter that I have been involved with is either manufactured and assembled in the Far east or all parts manufactured in the far east and assembled in the UK (The minority).I wish someone could check this dealers stock and prove me totally correct!. Propaganda indeed!.”

“The whole "Mobility" business is a very grey area.My wife is Disabled and she has a large 8mph (Registered) scooter and a smaller 4/5mph pavement model. Both are from a well known and respected manufacturer (Pri??e). From a local mobility Shop the price of the large model was £1300.00 and from a Mobility Retail Outlet up North, via the Internet was £400.00 cheaper ,delivered. the warranty was exactly he same both 12 Months on site . I tackled the local dealer about the price differential...the response... better buy the cheaper one then. What has to be taken into account is that most purchasers are elderly and do not have access to the internet and will use a "Mobility Allowance" to purchase... so jump in Local dealers with stupidly high prices. "Caveot Emptor". If anyone doubts my experience then just do some tesearch.”

“Same thing applies to some of those cheap Chinese motorbikes people buy from Ebay or backstret bike shops. The sellers often have no workshops,no mechanical aptitude and no way of backing up any promised warranty. Motorcycle repair shops will usually refuse to work on the things as well, not NakedWithGoat because they're not bought from them but because they're cheap and nasty, spares are hard to get and customers complain at the extra couple of hours labour because everythings seized up or rounded off because of shoddy materials.
Bottom line, you usually get what you pay for,no more ,no less.”

“In other words, buy them from Britian at twice the price otherwise we will not repair them.”
