TAMAR Trotters' John Marshall and Tavistock's Adam Holland had to settle for second and third places in the annual January Jaunt 10k.

The local pair could not prevent Torbay veteran Peter Monaghan running away with the race that is organised by the Plymouth Round Table.

Monaghan, 48, finished in a time of 35 minutes and 35 seconds, which was nearly two minutes faster than fellow 48-year-old Marshall, who came home in 37:14.

Holland, who had finished second in 2012, clocked 37:42 in the race that starts and finishes at St Boniface Arena and heads up and around the Saltram estate.

By winning Monaghan achieved a Plymouth Round Table double, as he had also claimed victory in their sister race, The Mad March Hare 10k, 10 months earlier.

There was also a dominant performance in the women's race with Rachel Tuck destroying her rivals.

Tuck finished eighth overall in a time of 38:32.

The second women home was Erme Valley Harriers' Jane Swift, who came home in a time of 40:39.

Erme Valley's Cleo Andrews was third lady home in a time of 41:56, just ahead of Plymouth Harriers' Jane Allison.

More than 231 athletes finished the race.

This year's Mad March Hare event will take place on Sunday, March 17.
