Motor industry boosted as car sales accelerate
NEW car sales roared ahead last month, according to official figures. A total of 134,944 new cars were registered in October – a 2.6 per cent rise on the October 2010 figure, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
Despite the increase last month, sales for the year so far are still down on the figure for the first ten months of last year, which was boosted by the Government's car-scrappage scheme.
Sales for January-October 2011 have totalled 1,688,038 – a 4.5 per cent dip on the same period of 2010.
Sales last month were nearly seven per cent ahead of SMMT forecasts, but nearly 20 per cent off the level recorded for October 2007, prior to the recession.
Sales for 2011 are likely to reach just over 1.92 million, which would compare with a total of 2.03 million in 2010 when registrations were also boosted by the car scrappage scheme.
Sales in 2012 are expected to reach 1.96 million.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The October 2011 rise was a positive result despite the uncertain economic climate.
"Vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks are working hard to offer consumers value for money through improved fuel efficiency, low running costs and innovative finance. We expect market conditions to remain challenging and hope the Chancellor's autumn statement later this month will help to boost economic growth and consumer confidence."

“Best way to get the best deal is to shop around. Personally, I have found main dealers in Gloucestershire to be more expensive compared to the rest of the main dealers in the surrounding areas.”
