A MOTHER caught with an opened bottle of vodka at a Plymouth play barn while looking after her child was nearly twice the legal drink-drive limit, a court heard.

Susan Cooper, aged 43, from Oldlands Close, Widewell, admitted being drunk in charge of a child at Drake's Den in Estover on November 20.

She also admitted to Plymouth magistrates that she drove while over the legal alcohol limit on the same day.

Gareth Warden, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said that police were called to the play barn.

He said officers were told that she had an opened bottle of vodka with her and 'came across as drunk'.

Mr Warden said that officers found that about two shots of vodka had gone from the bottle.

He added that she told officers that she had to leave because she was due to pick up her son at 6pm.

Mr Warden said that she was taken to the far end of the car park but then realised that her car was right outside next to the police vehicle.

He added that officers formed the opinion that she was under the influence of alcohol and she was breathalysed.

The court heard that the result was positive and she later provided a blood sample which measured 156 micrograms in 100 millilitres. The legal limit is 80.

Mr Warden said that Cooper admitted that she had driven to the play barn.

The court heard that she was convicted a dew days later of an earlier offence of drink-driving on October 20 last year.

Julian Jefferson, for Cooper, said that there was no allegation she had mistreated the child, who is just over 12 months old, at Drake's Den.

He said that the Harbour counselling service and her GP had been helping her with alcohol dependency.

Mr Jefferson said that she was suffering a period of 'emotional upset' at the time which brought the problems to the fore.

But he said that she was 'dry' at the moment.

Magistrates ordered the probation service to prerpare a short report on Cooper's background.

She was released to return to court today so she can be sentenced.

    “Facts:

    She was drunk.
She had been driving drunk with her child in the car.
She was in care her baby drunk.

**NO MATTER WHAT SPIN YOU PUT ON IT SHE WAS DRINK DRIVING AND PUT HER CHILD IN DANGER**

I nor any SANE and RESPONSIBLE person would do that with their own child or any other child. She needs seriously looking into with regards to the safety of her children.
No matter what anyone says there is NO excuse or reason to get into a car with a Child, DRUNK!!”

“Drink driving is a serious issue ans should be dealt with as such.
The other issue of being drunk in charge of child is somewhat different.
How many parents, or posters on this site, have settled down to a few beers or bottles of wine when they have put their kids to bed?
Lots of high-horse comments based on little info in the press and perhaps ill-considered on reflection of people's own lives??”

“@KMT, Devon .... who cares about a report ? As someone who found their friend and another person dead at the scene of a drunk drive accident ,both with families left behind - I think 10 year bans should be in place. The message about drink driving is obviously not getting through. I dont care what circumstances she has .. she should not have got in that car . Be gratefull she never killed anyone you know . PC hypocrites annoy the hell out of me .”

“KMT it's not just the life of her child she is risking while driving drunk it's anyone else who happens to be on the same road. If it's any consolation she wll get a driving ban so the rest of us are not at such a risk but the future of the child does not look bright.”

“Aren't we fortunate that the courts have more sense than the majority of people commenting on this article. The magistrates have not jumped to conclusions but have asked for a report on the mother's background before they come to any judgement.”

“Sharon, none of us know the full circumstances/details, and which services may already be involved, including social services. You talk about society being afraid to intervene. Social services will only take a child away as a last resort, as all the evidence and research done shows that the best place for the vast majority of children is at home with their parent/parents. Taking a child away and putting them into care very often does a lot more damage.”

“Abusing children is not just hitting etc it comes in many forms including your parent drinking to access. How can some one be charged with dangerous driving and not child neglect or even endangerment?
The child is still with this mother and without the help she needs will only carry on drinking and neglecting her children, but more secretively and until the children are hurt or worse, Killed, because of the parents alcoholism their lives will be blighted.

I always wonder about extended family in situations like these and even the father¿s involvement? Surely some one else must have been aware of this woman¿s drinking. To many children are left to suffer because society is afraid to intervene. Its only at the gravesides of those little angels do we weep, hang our heads in shame and say-I knew and wished I¿.

After all these children will eventually become our doctors nurses solicitors care givers------ frightening thought!

Well done staff at the Pay barn for reporting this woman and possibly stopping a fatal accident that quite possibly could have been one of the readers family.”

“Not only she put the life of her kids in danger but that kind of behavious is unacceptable in a play centre for young kids! I would not allow that kind of low life around my kid especially in a place that is supposed to be a happy safe place! and paying to entre as well!
    that is plain shocking.”
