Mutley pub to be turned into Plymouth's first Sainsbury's Local convenience store
SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's will open its first Plymouth convenience store in a former pub next week creating 23 jobs.
The retail giant has spent the past six months converting the shell of what was once the Mutley Crown into a 2,200sq ft Sainsbury's Local branch.

Mutley pub to be turned into Plymouth's first Sainsbury's Local convenience store
It will open the Mutley Plain store on Friday, March 1, inviting children from two nearby pre-school groups to do the honours.
The chain was keen on the location because it wanted to tap into the large student population living in the Mutley area, with the Sainsbury's Local brand particularly focused on ready meals and other products designed for people on-the-go.

Since the first Sainsbury's Local began trading in Hammersmith, London, in 1998, more than 300 have opened nationwide as the chain takes on rivals such as Tesco Express and small Co-operative food stores.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson told The Herald the chain is looking for other opportunities to open smaller convenience branches in Plymouth.
Debra Owen, who has been taken on by the supermarket as a customer service assistant, said: "I can really see myself progressing within the company, and have found them very encouraging.
"I'm looking forward to starting in the new store and providing great service to the people of Mutley."
Sainsbury's has organised a Fairtrade colouring competition for children at Toadhall and Honeyschute Pre-schools.
The winning four children will get to cut the ribbon and open the new store as their prize.
Bosses say the store is looking to build strong links with the neighbouring community and it will be supporting Mutley Greenbank Trust Charity this year.
The chain aims to help children and youths "integrate" with the community by supporting improvements in facilities.
Matt Pugh, manager of the new store, said: "We are looking forward to opening the first Sainsbury's Local in Plymouth and have had some very positive feedback already.
"We are proud to have created 23 jobs in the area."

"Plymouth's first Sainsbury's Local convenience store??
i thought there was already a Sainsbury's on the roundabout next to the hotel?
that means there will be 2 stores 5 minutes apart. makes perfect sense!"
The Reverend, isnt the Sainsburys you are referring to their rather large superstore at Marsh Mills? There is another superstore in town but the "local" concept is a different part of the business.
They have recently taken over a former pub in Leicester and a former branch of the Nat West bank in Nottingham (both near the respective cities rail stations) and opened them up under the "local" banner. I hope they do well but will be interesting given the fact Tesco and the CO-OP are already on Mutley Plain.”

“I think morrisons have bought blockbusters so mutely could end up with four supermarket chains within a hundred metres of each other”

“3 small supermarkets in 1 street!
With parking in Mutley plain never going to improve can't see the attraction myself”

“Drinking patterns have changed in recent years, though. These days people get hammered at home first on cheap supermarket booze, then go out on the lash later. So it's still contributing to the problem, really.”

“Makes a pleasant change from the creeping tesco syndrome.
At least its a light bright and airy shop.
Still prefer the co-op and me "Divi"

“Re Nevman, take your point, but they wont be licensed to consume on the premises and spew up over passers by when exiting the shop.”

“You don't suppose this Sainsbury's might stock booze then, whinger7643?”

“At last we take one step to returning this area into a shopping facility, for which it was originally intended, not yet another booze run.”

“According to one member of staff at Blockbusters in Plymouth the Mutley branch is closing. Bearing in mind Sainsburys is now occupying a former pub then it possible that another supermarket will
take over the Blockbuster premises.
However according to The Herald both Blockbuster stores are being kept open!”
