N-subs 'to stay in Scotland'
NUCLEAR submarines will stay in Scotland in the short-term, even if the country declares independence, Ministry of Defence sources suggest, writes Graeme Demianyk.
Plymouth could still be home to the UK's nuclear deterrent and submarine fleet if a referendum sees the United Kingdom split. The Scottish National Party has already said Trident nuclear missiles would be removed from the Clyde under independence.
MoD insiders believe that, after an independence vote, ministers in London would be forced to strike a deal with Scottish leaders allowing the Navy to go on using Coulport, where missiles and warheads are stored, and Faslane, where the subs are based, until an alternative was ready.
That would give Scotland's new government huge bargaining power.
One source was quoted as saying: "Berths would not be a problem – there are docks on the south coast that could be used without too much fuss.
"But there simply isn't anywhere else where we can do what we do at Coulport and, without that, there is no deterrent."
Any move south would cost billions of pounds. Devonport Naval Base is an alternative as it is currently home to three nuclear-powered submarines and is the UK's only base capable of maintaining the current and future submarine fleet.

“We must remember that the nuclear deterrent is a UK deterrent, and the non-nuclear weapon submarines are supposed to protect the UK (not that you would assume so under current tasking).
When the site for the base for the nuclear sterrent was originally chosen, two sites were short-listed; Faslane/Coulport and Falmouth (note npt Plymouth!). Faslane/Coulport was chosen in the end due to the regular cloud cover which would limit spying from aircraft/satellites at the time. Of course modern satlleite technology make this requirement redundant.
Bearing in mind that the submarines provide deterrent/protection for the whole of the UK, then the Scottish government would have a hard task seeling the removal of this cover if independence was voted for. Indeed the whole issue of defence may scupper the whole independence idea.
The problem is that, unless such issues are accurately portrayed in the briefing notes that are issued with the voting forms, most Scots will vote with their hearts on their sleeves rather than with a sense of realism.
Regardless, there is no money in the MoD's coffers to relocate the deterrent and other submarines to Devonport. The Trident programme cost the taxpayer at least £10Billion before HMS Vanguard even arrived in Faslane!
Plymouthians don't even want to refit the boats with no weapons on board, let alone transfer them here on a regular basis.”

“Of course you will manage as you have the specially designed roads required for warhead transportation, cranes and the facilities to store them in the middle of a densely populated area, which is earthquake and attack proof, with the 350 ish armed police staff and dogs required to secure the area, and the shiplift facilities to do emergency dockings, and the specially trained staff to operate and maintain these facilities, the list goes on. So in a nutshell no you can't!”

“Billions of pounds spent on a storage facilities for nuclear submarine warheads. Perhaps located next to the intended North yard monster construction with one of the highest intended incinerators ever, burning the toxic waste from 264 juggernauts daily spewing forth their filthy toxic fumes and filling the storage bunker on the basis of every 2-1/2 minutes -24/7 for the next 24 years. For what now seems the whole of the county and beyond. Where do they find these people with such hair brain schemes. Wake up Plymouth the attack is coming from all sides.
Ask for evacuation routes and procedures.”

“That was obvious. Plymouth has neither the facilities, space or finances for this relocation to happen! Where would the peace camp be set up? Oh just think of the objections to that. I don't know who this source was but I'm guessing maybe a Plymouth taxi driver as they appear not to have done their homework! This would be a massive project which the over budget spent on 9 dock gives an indication of how much the tax payer would be required to foot.”
