New bakery gets celebrity opening with Splash star
GETTING diving coach Andy Banks to open your business is a good way to provide it with a springboard for success, a new bakery found.
Tom Daley's mentor, and co-star on TV's surprise hit show Splash!, is more often seen among the pikes than the pasties. But he took time out from his diving duties to perform the honours at the St Maurice Bakery, in Plympton.

The business is run by Samantha Evans, previously boss of Hooe Pasties, and will specialise in gluten-free products, created in a purpose-built preparation area.
The bakery also contains inside seating with a plan to introduce outdoor tables. There are also plans to extend the gluten-free menu.

"I'm pleased with how everything has gone," said Ms Evans. "The shop has been buzzing since it opened and everything produced was sold out on the opening day."
Lai-Yin Wong Brooks, who runs the Oriental food business called simply 8, and who stages demonstrations of gluten-free cookery in Plymouth, said: "It's great to see more businesses opening up that cater for coeliacs. I'm stocking Chinese gluten-free products for sale at St Maurice Bakery and planning some Chinese gluten-free demonstrations there."
