CHILDREN in Elburton now have a new-look playground to enjoy – just in time for Easter.

Plymouth City Council leader Cllr Vivien Pengelly, Cabinet member Cllr Michael Leaves and council play officer Joy Davenport put the new equipment to the test at the King George V playing fields in Haye Road in Elburton.

The playground now features new sets of swings, a giant nest swing and a climbing wall with two look-out towers, while over at Muggerbrook Park, known as Blackstone Close, children can sample a banister slide as well as a dish roundabout, fitness kit and new swings.

The work at King George V also includes a performance area and lots of new planting to make it feel and look more natural.

South Hams company Earthwrights carried out the work using material such as sand from local quarries, nets produced by local fishing companies and wood from South West forests.

Their design was given the seal of approval by local residents and children from Elburton Primary School, who were invited to draw up ideas and help shape the designs.

Plymouth City Council was awarded more than £1million through the national Play Builder project to improve play opportunities across the city and has three years to improve at least 20 play areas.

Other sites which will be transformed this year include Leigham Open Space, Thames Gardens in Efford, St Levan's Park in Keyham and Glenholt Open Space.

Last year saw the installation of nets, slides, stepping blocks and swings as part of improvements to Trefusis Park in Laira, Patna Place in Stonehouse, Pendeen Crescent in Southway, Bellingham Crescent in Plympton and Yealmpstone Open Space.
