Dons boss Neal Ardley (pictured) was formerly the academy manager at Cardiff and used his connections there to snap up Darko.
Brennan Dickenson also made his debut for Wimbledon against Dagenham, playing on the left wing.
Dickenson, 19, was signed on a one-month loan from Championship club Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday.
Should Alexander be ruled out by injury tonight, Dickenson is set to move into the Dons' attack with top scorer Jack Midson, who has grabbed 10 goals in all competitions.
