DANCING in hot pants and smashing up bits of rubbish outside Drake Circus shopping centre is one way to get noticed.

And two groups did exactly that as they protested against physical and sexual abuse towards women yesterday.

Plymouth City Roller Girls, the city's female roller derby team, and Weapons of Sound, a band that use pieces of junk as instruments, teamed up to hold a dance protest outside the city's main shopping centre.

Skater and demonstration organiser Hannah Wood said: "The fact that one in three women in the world will be raped or beaten in her life is shocking. Rape, genital mutilation, domestic violence – none of it should happen and it must be stopped. We believe the only place a women should get hit is on the derby track!"

“After reading this article, I decided to have a bit of think about the question this raised in my head as I read one in three women will be raped and beaten. So I sat down with my books over the weekend on the history of mankind, as we are today, and in 12,000 years of history starting with the Nomads from Africa, to the industrial cities we live in today's age of wired concrete.
This suggests that we are the most violent and amorous version of the human race ever to walk the planet. I've done some manual labour in my time and have worked up and down the country and have also worked with some people from all over the world, who seriously question their opinions.
I say 'their' opinions as I've worked with the roller derby girls and weapons of sound in the most common of offices and socialised with them outside the work place too.
In short, they have been in their past, very silly girls getting drunk a bit too much and then crying rape or violence, but never really going to the authorities and obviously enjoying the thuggish behaviour of their partners on late night weekends.
I've seen some of these people go through various fear monger campaigns such as one in so many people will get divorced within so many few years and sure enough they are the living proof as apparently, it can happen to anyone.
Also one in four people suffer from mental illness, and of course they work in mental health care and psychology and now quite a few positions of face to face customer service.
Now one in three women will be raped and beaten? Emphasis and the word 'will'. Quite a prediction as borders shift rapidly at times and with the growing and changing content of the internet with all its resources, this suggests we are the most violent version of the human race to walk the planet so far, perhaps.
So many women I've worked with have been very hard work themselves and really enjoyed the old forced hand routine. So other women have left.
I have found it very difficult to work with these people and would find it difficult to put up with three years of obnoxious undergraduate behaviour, so I do a lot from home including the shopping if I can, not to say I don't get out.
So I would be cautious to hold value in some of what I've read in the Herald on that day, as it is an old trick to cry rape as I see young women enjoying carnal violence and the second guessing it spreads in communities. Remember, everyone wants to be on the idiot lantern.”
