Cllr Robert Oxborough, the council's community services committee chairman, said: "Bringing in the new £1 tariff will make it more affordable for people who like to go on shorter walks or cycle rides in the area."

The council is keen to hear the views of residents and visitors about the changes (call Cathy Aubertin on 01822 813600 or email caubertin@westdevon.gov.uk).

The income from both car parks is ring-fenced and can only be spent on the trails, part of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project, and rental payments to landowners.
