A PENSIONER was in a serious condition in hospital last night following a crash involving a fully-loaded recycling lorry on the A38.

Firefighters had to cut the elderly man, believed to be in his 80s, free from his car. He was taken to hospital with serious neck injuries.

The road was partially closed while road crash investigators tried to establish what happened.

Eyewitnesses say crews had to cut the roof from the Rover. The elderly man was the only person in the car. Three fire crews were joined by at least two ambulances at the scene of the smash, onlookers said.

A police spokesman described the HGV driver as "walking wounded".

Another HGV narrowly missed crashing into the car and lorry, coming to rest at a 45 degree angle.

Massive tailbacks stretched as far as the St Budeaux off-slip and diversions were in place. Lane one of the stretch was re-opened at around 4.10pm.

A police spokeswoman said the injured man had suffered a "significant neck injury" in the smash. Last night, he was expected to undergo an operation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101 quoting log 0329.

“"Three fire crews were joined by at least two ambulances at the scene of the smash, onlookers said."

Isn't it overkill and a waste of resources for three fire crews to attend?

What about fire coverage in the rest of Plymouth?”

“Concernedply, every time there is a young person involved whats the first 2 words uttered by most people, boy racer, weather they are or not nose assume its the fault of the young person due to their " inexperience " on the road so yes I'd say there is a bud hoo hah about you g drivers, as for the actual collision who's to say what happened except those that were there all else is speculation.”

“why do people automaticly think because an elderly person is involed in a accident its because of thier age , it might have been the other drivers fault
when younger people are involved in a car CRASH they dont dont make a big thing of thier age .
because your of a certain age doesnt mean you should stop driving concerned plymouth”

“this might sound very negative but its not meant in that way at all, lots of elderly people are involved in traffic accidents and its usually their fault as they cant turn their head like they once could have and reactions are very slow, i used to watch my 78 year old uncle drive and the family had to step in and ask him to basically hand over his keys as he was an accident waiting to happen! i think it should be compulsory (and free) that once one gets to a certain age, they should retake their driving test and do so every year or two after. i know its wishful thinking that our government would ever allow that but im sure there will be less accidents on the road! i hope the gent is ok though.”

“By the law of averages there have been an incredible amount of accidents in Plymouth over the past few days. The roadworks on the Parkway aren't helping; people grow impatient, its dark and people emerging from sliproads onto dual carriageways thinking they have a right of way should be taken to task. I've had many a near miss on the Parkway - especially by the Devonport and Manadon sliproads where drivers seem to choose to ignore the dotted white 'Give Way' signs and think those of us already on the main road should brake to let them in. Such is the amount of traffic on the road now, the outside lane is often choc-a-block and you can't move over to allow people in ahead of you. Give Way means Give Way. As for the age of the driver - I'm not qualified to judge whether people should hang their keys up at i.e. 75 years old but doctors are eligible to practice medicine indefinately. I once knew a doctor who was still practising at the age of 91 (and he was driving a Jaguar!). Personally I would like to retire gracefully much, much earlier than that but some people have a tenacity to hang on. The subject for another debate perhaps.”

“@LucyLastick: No, love. I'm not going to be a nuisance to other people driving at 15mph and putting innocent at risk because of being blind as a bat and having reaction time of a sloth.”
