It was Ridsdale who sacked Peter Reid as Argyle manager and replaced him with Carl Fletcher.

Then, soon after moving to Preston, Ridsdale took the decision to dismiss boss Phil Brown and appointed Stevenage's Graham Westley.

Preston's visit to Home Park will come four days after they entertain another of Ridsdale's former clubs, Leeds United, at Deepdale.

Ridsdale told Herald Sport: "We will have no other matches in the South West.

"We were looking for an away pre-season fixture. I was talking to (Argyle general manager and football secretary) Jason Turner and we both realised we had a spare slot and suggested the fixture to our respective managers.

"I'm delighted to be returning to Home Park," he added.

The pre-season game against Argyle will be the second of two friendlies in which Preston will play League Two opposition.

They will travel to AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday, July 31.
