MIDFIELDER Anton Peterlin is excited about both the prospect of signing for Plymouth Argyle and their chances of success in the forthcoming League One campaign.

Manager Peter Reid has moved to add Peterlin to his squad after the 23-year-old impressed while on trial.

Peterlin, who was released by Everton at the end of last season, believes Argyle are a good fit for him.

He told Herald Sport: "I'm excited to play League One football. It would be nice to get some first-team action, to get my name out there.

"And I would like to help this team get up to the Championship again.

"There are some quality players here and if we buy into the principles of the gaffer I think we can go far."

Peterlin has been on trial with Argyle since the start of pre-season training.

The opportunity came about after his agents, Graham Smith and Barry MacLean, contacted Argyle coaches Paul Mariner and John Carver.

Peterlin made an instant impression as he topped the charts for the players' fitness tests on day one.

"It was nerve-wracking to start with, because you know you have got to play well," said Peterlin.

"But once you get past the first few days and you are okay with the fitness, and you start playing football and getting into the rhythm, then it comes pretty natural.

"It's definitely very exciting because you are striving to be the best you can every day."

Peterlin has played in all five of Argyle's pre-season games, making two starts and three appearances as a substitute.

His all-action displays soon caught the eye of Reid.

Peterlin said: "Pre-season has gone well for me. The lads have been really nice to me and we have done a lot of good work in training.

"The gaffer and his coaching staff haven't killed us, but we are definitely fitter than we were at the start of pre-season.

"We have played well in our matches and we are becoming more and more organised."

Peterlin did some research on Reid before starting his trial with Argyle and found out he had also been a central midfielder, and of some standing in English football.

"I know the gaffer was an England international and was a very good midfielder," said Peterlin.

"He played the position I prefer, so I will definitely be looking to him for guidance. Hopefully, he will help me out."

Peterlin was born in San Francisco, USA, to a Danish mother and Slovenian father.

He played football at collegiate level in America, first for the University of California, Santa Cruz, and later with California Polytechnic State University.

During his off-seasons, Peterlin played for the San Francisco Seals and Ventura County Fusion in USL Premier Development League.

Peterlin had a trial with Everton during the 2008/09 season and was signed on a one-year contract last July.

He could not force his way into the first team at the Goodison Park club, and was released at the end of the campaign.

However, Peterlin believes the season he spent at the Premier League club was an invaluable experience for him.

He said: "It was incredible just being with those quality players every day. It inspires you.

"The time you have on the ball is very, very small and it's just amazing how they read the play and move the ball with such ease.

"It was rough I didn't get a chance to play for Everton, but I had world-class internationals in front of me.

"I just wanted to get my training in with the first team, and play for the reserves, and then, hopefully, go from there.

"You are very motivated and very lucky when you are in a situation like that. It was a very good experience for me.

"I learned a lot and I made a lot of friends, so it was good."

“If he turns out half as good as Friio I'll be delighted.

I saw the game at Truro and have to say my initial impression of him was favourable.”

“Seems like Peterlin is a player with the right attitude. Could be that Argyle have another Friio or Norris at the club?”
