ARGYLE have been drawn away to Cheltenham Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round.

The southern section tie will be played at the Abbey Business Stadium — otherwise known as Whaddon Road — on the week commencing October 4.

Cheltenham are in 12th position in League Two after their 3-1 defeat at Barnet on Saturday.

Argyle could have been paired against Devon rivals Exeter City or Torquay United in the second round draw, which took place on Saturday.

But Exeter must travel to Hereford United and Torquay will visit Swindon Town.

Argyle last played at Whaddon Road in August 2002, when they won 2-1 in Division Two (now League One).

The goalscorers from the Pilgrims in their come-from-behind victory were defenders Graham Coughlan and Paul Wotton.

Argyle and Cheltenham both received byes into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

They have met once previously in the competition in October 2001, when Cheltenham beat Argyle 2-1 at Whaddon Road.

Midfielder David Friio gave the visitors an early lead in the southern section first round tie.

But second half goals from Jamie Victory and Julian Alsop sent Cheltenham into the next round.

Meanwhile, Argyle manager Peter Reid will give run-outs to some of his squad players in the friendly away to Newton Abbot Spurs tomorrow (7.30pm).

The Pilgrims' reserves have played only once in the Totesport.com Combination this season.

That was a 4-0 defeat by Swindon Town at the County Ground on August 17.

Argyle's game against Newton Abbot Spurs will mark the official opening of their floodlights at the Recreation Ground.

The Pilgrims' latest signing, French defender Stephane Zubar could be among those to feature.

Reid believes the trip to play Newton Abbot Spurs, who are in Division One East of the South West Peninsula League, will be a useful exercise.

He said: "Matches are always better than training and we have got some players that need a game.

"We will have a look at the situation today in terms of who will play."
