PLYMOUTH pair Haydon Pinhey and Michael Day were unable to prevent their south Devon rivals from reaching the final of the latest leg of the Gold Waistcoat snooker tournament.

Pinhey bowed out 2-0 to Alan Tunney, while Day lost by a single frame to winner Andy Neck in the West of England Billiards & Snooker Foundation semi-finals, at Rileys in Plymouth.

Former professional Neck nicked a truncated final 1-0, after the duo agreed to a one-frame shoot-out so as not to miss the train back to south Devon.

It was a case of blink and you miss it, as the cue tips had hardly been chalked as Newton Abbot's Neck took the frame on the black ball and the winner's £150 prize money.

It will be scant consolation to Day that he pushed the in-form Neck the closest of any of the players in his 2-1, last four defeat.

Day inflicted the only frame loss on the day on Neck, who racked up an impressive tally of 17 frames won.

Pinhey can count himself unlucky too, as he fell victim to Torquay's Tunney, who produced some scintillating snooker throughout the event, and won his semi with the city teenager on the back of 73 and 54 breaks.

In the quarter-finals, Day had defeated Torbay's James Lee 2-0, while Pinhey progressed 2-1 at the expense of Exeter's Gary Weeks.

But Plymothian Grant Cole succumbed to Tunney 2-0, while Neck accounted for north Devon newbie Sheridan Tetley by the same margin and threw in a 101 break for good measure.

After three legs of the 2011/12 Gold Waistcoat series, Neck leads the table by a considerable margin, having logged 1,760 points with nearest rival Tunney next best on 1,260.

Plymouth potters Wayne Branton, who won the opening leg (990), and Steve Brookshaw (950) are in third and fourth places respectively.

City player Lee Walters, who won the second leg at Torquay, slips from fifth to ninth.

Roger Cole, spokesperson for the WEBSF said: "The Torbay duo Neck and Tunney are very much in form and have thrown down the gauntlet.

"However, we are only half way through the season and with one event result being discounted in the final ranking points tally, there is still all to play for.

"The friendly rivalry throughout the region is making this tour very interesting as each event unfolds."
