Play really is the Devil's own job
DIRECTOR Matt Hall's latest project for the Theatre Royal Plymouth People's Company is a rarely-performed Ben Jonson play.
Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare's, wrote The Devil Is An Ass in 1616. It's a fantastical setting involving Satan and Pug, an underling who wants to visit Earth and tempt men to evil.
The play may be nearly four centuries old, but the theme is universal.
Pug is given a single day to do the Devil's work and corrupt Fitzdottrel, a rich and foolish man who is constantly plagued by con artists selling flooded land and trying to steal his trophy wife. Does Pug stand a chance in a world already overflowing with vice and corruption? The show continues until tomorrow – Saturday February 18.

“We are so so lucky to have such a wonderful Theatre in Plymouth!
The new Phantom then Warhorse and at one time a few years ago four productions that started in Plymouth playing in London at the same time!”
