DEVONPORT Services have three new junior teams – all girls.

It follows the decision of Plymouth Albion's girls' section to end their links with the Championship club and make the short move to The Rectory.

The city's female under-13, under-15 and under-18 rugby teams will now play as Devonport Services Girls RFC and will be affiliated with both the EWRFC and RNRFU.

Their home games will now be played at Stonehouse or St Levan Road and their new club colours will be red and blue.

The girls teams have been looking to move from Albion for a number of months and held talks with a number of local clubs, including Ivybridge and Plymstock Albion Oaks.

However, after much discussion the girls opted to join Devonport Services, who have a highly successful boys junior set-up.

Secretary John Lee said the move is about trying to grow the girls game.

"We were not going anywhere where we were," said Lee.

"Albion have other priorities and we thought it was time for a change as we were not growing.

"It is about trying to further the girls' game.

"Devonport Services were very keen to have us there.

"They already have an established set up for the boys and many of those boys might have sisters who also want to play.

"Hopefully, us moving there will generate more girls joining us."

Lee said the Royal Navy were particularly keen to support the venture.

"The RNRFU were really enthusiastic for the link to take place and they have even bought three sets of kit for us.

"There is more of a club feeling down there (at Services).

"It is quite exciting."

The new-look Devonport Services teams will fulfil all the fixtures previously assigned to Albion.
