THE ABSENCE of injured Plymouth Argyle defender Curtis Nelson has been longer than expected, manager John Sheridan has admitted.

Nelson, 19, has missed the last six matches because of a groin problem and it is unclear when he will be ready to return to action.

He has not played for five weeks, since the 0-0 League Two draw with Accrington Stanley at Home Park on January 26.

Sheridan told Herald Sport: "I don't really know what's going on with Nelse. He has been out a bit longer than I thought it would be.

"I was expecting him back by now but it's just one of those niggling injuries.

"Nelse knows his own body and he just keeps feeling twinges here and there. I'm sure he will tell us when he's okay."

Nelson had played regularly for Argyle this season, making 25 starts and two substitute appearances in all competitions, before he was sidelined by injury.

Sheridan has revealed right-back Durrell Berry could be available for the trip to promotion-chasing Gillingham on Saturday.

Berry has been ruled out of the last three matches by tendonitis in a knee, with Maxime Blanchard taking over from the 20-year-old in the line-up.

Sheridan said: "Durrell has been having a bit of treatment and a bit of rest. He's improving."

Argyle goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin has also started light training after a hamstring injury, which forced his substitution in the draw with Accrington.

Jake Cole replaced Gilmartin that afternoon, and has started the six matches since then.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jamie Lowry has injured an ankle in training and Argyle are assessing how long he will be out of action.

It is the same ankle which the 25-year-old hurt in pre-season and meant he missed the first two months of the League Two campaign.

Lowry last played for Argyle in Sheridan's first match as manager, the 2-1 home win against Morecambe on January 12.

He was a non-playing substitute for the next three games, but did not even make the bench after that.

Sheridan said: "Jamie went over on his ankle in training last week. I'm hoping that's not too serious.

"I think it's the same ankle he did during the summer, but not as bad. He has caught it and it's swollen."

A LAST-GASP goal from Solomon Wheatley saw Argyle under-18s win 2-1 against Torquay United in the Football League Youth Alliance South West Conference at Cullompton Rangers FC yesterday.

Argyle took the lead with a penalty from striker Tyler Harvey after a cross from Josh Hutchinson was handled.

Torquay equalised before half-time with a shot which took two deflections before ending up in the net and it remained 1-1 until the break.

Argyle controlled the second period and chances came and went for Harvey, Wheatley and Matt Lecointe.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Wheatley latched onto a pass from Lecointe and slotted the ball past the onrushing 'keeper.

“@TheMercenary,agree Curtis is a class act and hopefully we will be able to hang on to him in the future, its around players like him that the Argyle of the future has to be built.
Memories of another Nelson (who older pilgrims might remember ) who also was a centre half spring to mind,Andy Nelson who played in Alf Ramseys Ipswich team when they won the first division title back n the sixties before joining the Greens,if Curtis emulates him his value to the club as a player would be immense,as long as the usual doesn't happen and we cash in for peanuts.”

“In my opinion Curtis Nelson is the ONLY Argyle player with any class and we're lucky to still have him. I don't know when his contract expires but I can't see him hanging around when it does. Get fit soon lad, we need you desperately.”
