PLYMOUTH City Council is to spend nearly £500,000 repairing roads damaged in the recent bad weather – on top of the £760,000 it has already spent resurfacing roads in the last 12 months.

Last night the local authority announced it will undertake a 10-week pothole fixing programme to address the damage done to the city's roads by the severe wet weather in November and December.

A minimum of nine work crews will be assigned to the pothole programme, which the council has released £225,000 to fund, until the end of March.

Councillor Mark Coker, cabinet member for transport, said: "This money is enabling us to send more crews out from Monday, making more first-time permanent repairs to potholes, rather than temporary repairs."

Another £200,000 will also be invested in a patching programme for the most severely damaged roads, which will start in February.

This money is part of the additional £250,000 capital funding that Councillor Coker negotiated through Cabinet in December for repairs to larger sections of road.

Plymouth Transport and Highways (PTH), the partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey, is also surveying sites in readiness for the £380,000 funding committed to Plymouth for capital highway maintenance by the Department of Transport, which is due to be received in April.

Cllr Coker said: "The recent wet weather has ravaged roads in Plymouth and across the region. We are investing in additional resources and innovative equipment to help address the situation as quickly as possible.

"We have already spent £760,000 this year resurfacing 17 roads around the city and are committed to maintaining our highways network to the highest standard. We appreciate that travelling around Plymouth will be challenging over the coming weeks and ask road users to be patient while this essential work is undertaken."

Roads will be prioritised for repairs according to the severity of the water damage.

“Where is Pot Hole Repair Drive? Sounds like top place to me, but not one I would like to live with all those holes. In fact, it may be one of the few places in Plymouth where there are no potholes as they have been repaired properly”

“As a local tax payer could the council furnish the Poll Tax payers in the city which Pot Holes have been filled in with this money...or has it by passed the Pot Hole and gone straight into the private company's coffers.

Who do they employ to fix these?
I could do you a far better job on my own.

" How much is it going to cost in litigation if the holes continue causing damage to vehicles?"

It will cost the council tax payer!”

“Depends how it is spent. I think the Plymstock east end scheme cost around £10 million however a big pot hole has already appeared as you enter Hele's terrace. You would think this would be under some sort of guarantee would it not however it was filled in as a pothole. The result of this is it lasted about 2 weeks and now is a pothole again.
The scheme has also created new rat runs through the back streets off Grenville and Desborough road which have caused them to deteriorate badly over the last few months. Why weren't these roads upgraded/repaired as part of the scheme. The were bad enough before it started.”
