Bonjour and Hola were some of the greetings offered by language teachers in Plymouth Central Library during the European Day of Languages.

It was the fifth time the event, which  is celebrated throughout the EU and co-sponsored by Europe Direct, has been held in the library . It included language taster sessions with expert tutors, activities for and with children and a chance to meet some of the organisations involved with teaching foreign languages or helping foreigners understand the English language and culture.

"We present languages for anyone interested in learning a new one and at the same time it is a chance for the library to showcase some of the language learning materials that we can offer Plymouth's inhabitants free of charge, so there is definitely a synergy there," Chris Hunnings, Learning & Information Services Manager at Plymouth Central and branch libraries, said.

One of the organisations present was Amber Initiatives, who focus on helping people from central and eastern European countries find their feet on the British isles and help people from the UK prepare for visits the region.

"English is an international language, but it is not spoken everywhere, so people interested in travelling to the countries we come from could benefit hugely from just knowing basic phrases," Eva Nezvalova and Olga Kapachenza said.

One of the people perusing the various languages on offer was Katharina Volk from Germany.

"The first place I sat down happened to be the Greek stand, and we both laughed at that. I think languages connect people," she said.

The European Day of Languages is celebrated throughout the 47 member states of the EU. On the occasion of the day, a range of events are organised across Europe: activities for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences.

Europe Direct is based in Plymouth Central Library and offers information about:

  • Quick answers to your questions on Europe, including:
  • travelling, studying and working in European Union (EU) countries
  • how the EU works
  • how EU decisions affect the UK
  • funding opportunities for organisations and businesses
