Plymouth's Mega Ride motorcycle event has had to be postponed due to weather conditions and health and safety issues, says one of its organisers.

The annual event, which sees hundreds of bikes ride through Plymouth, will now be held on Sunday, August 12, 2012.

Russell Soper, an organiser of Mega Ride, said: "The grass area on Plymouth Hoe has been waterlogged and no trade stands or public would be allowed in this area.

"We can not run the risk of Traders Public and Bikes together. The Megaride team are gutted but hope you can make the new date.

"We feel it is better to be safe than sorry."

Russell commented on the poor weather conditions across the country as 65mph winds battered Devon.

"The weather is not good for bikers to be travelling and we have people coming from many miles away to attend this annual event," he added.

The event helps raise funds for various charities.

“So jabbathebutt you think raising money for cancer research is a trivial event? sounds to me like you should change your name to Jabbatalkingoutofhisbutt!! and as for Lefkos get a life or at least some earplugs to block out those damn noisy bikers:) what a drama Queen lol.”

“At least the roads werent closed yet again as they seem to be every weekend for some trivial event that seems to be the fashion the last few years . Bring on more rain if this is the case .At least the majority can have a stress free few days . Which is a rarity lately .
Looking forward to next week road closures which the ones who are causing it say "yeh - but its only once year !" .....”

“Oh Believe Me I am certainly no ` Chardonnay ` as you put it Lefkos. I am fully aware there are those who raise several thousands for various charities and DO NOT want recognition for their efforts. The mega ride grows year on year in support, not because they are the ` HEY LOOK AT ME!` brigade but people who share a common interest and in doing so raise thousand for several LOCAL good causes, as well as providing a good family day out on the Hoe for those who wish to go and add their support. Sadly there are still prejudiced people who are FAR TOO QUICK to make assumptions about others whilst pathetically blowing here own trumpet.”

“Just to let everyone know, there is an unofficial ride. instead of expecting thousands we are expecting hundreds, same place but leaving at 11am and arriving at captain jaspers rather than the hoe. there will be no stands or stalls and there will be no entry fee. This is just a large bike event because it would be a shame for people who have organised to come on the ride to not have a ride out. Also those who do not hear it is cancelled can still join in, so come along, I believe captain jaspers is expecting us so come meet us between 10am-11am at lee mill industrial estate tomorrow!”

“Come on Lefkos its only one day out of the year, for christ sake how pathetic do you sound!! Turn your tv or radio up abit if it bothers you that much .. fair enough you obviously don't like bikes but this event is raising money for a number of charities .. Lefkos obviously not all the bikers who attend the event are from plymouth lol but thats why this event is so great, it draws in people from outside of plymouth which is good for the city, and raises more money for the charities! And i think its great that loads of 'SPOTTERS' (as you call them) come out to watch the bikes drive by, it shows that they are supporting what we're doing .. stop being such a bore and go live in the countryside with the animals (unless they will be too loud for you as well)!!”

“Some of us ARE charity workers and have been for the past three years as well as a school governor. All graft for no pay and usually little thanks but we do it because it is what floats our boat. Interestingly back in the 1970s I attended the TT Races and the Bike Show in Earls Court among other biker events on the south coast where it was all low key. I can recall being thrown off a campsite in the New Forest circa 1982 due to the Hells Angels having caused havoc the year before and blackening all bikers names. It seems people now want to be a celebrity out of anything at all. It's the 'Look at me' syndrome. As as for getting out of Devon .... how many of the megaride bikers were actually born here I wonder? Try going through London or Birmingham to attract attention. So yes Sharon and Betty (or is it Chardonnay's?) - some of us are getting of our backsides rather a lot but like to keep the profile low key these days.”
