A SPECIAL Olympic athlete who is preparing for the National Games has been invited to the House of Commons.

Elizabeth Haywood will be heading to Bath in August to compete in her specialist sport of badminton for the South West region at the 2013 Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

The 20-year-old has been invited to the House of Commons today to celebrate her recent sporting achievements.

Elizabeth is a member of Special Olympics Plymouth and District club and in September last year was entered into the four nations badminton competition in Cardiff.

She won a Gold and Silver medal in her first ever competition.

This week's visit to the capital is a trip Elizabeth will never forget. Elizabeth is travelling to London today and is having tea at the Ritz Hotel followed by a tour of the prestigious venue.

Tomorrow, Elizabeth is visiting Gary Streeter MP and the Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, who is also a Special Olympics Plymouth and District Patron, at the House of Commons.

Special Olympics GB is the largest registered charity providing year round sports training and competition opportunities for people with intellectual (learning) disabilities.

Special Olympics Great Britain serves over 8,000 registered athletes annually through almost 150 volunteer-led local clubs and 19 regions.
