AUTHOR Leyland Perree will be signing copies of his children’s book in a city bookstore after shifting 165 copies in Plymouth alone in the run up to Christmas.

The Great Reef Race also sold out at a previous signing event when it was launched at the Drake Circus mall’s Waterstones, and the book, illustrated by city artist Stuart McGhee, is already on its third reprint.

Mr Perree said: “We sold out at Waterstones on launch day and again at the city centre’s Christmas market the following day.

“The book proved to be a best seller at the market stall and we found ourselves almost constantly having to order more stock.

Mr Perree, who has also penned Toad Road Code, and Mr McGhee, the drawing talent involved with the Rockhoppas cartoon favourites, are staging a second signing event at the mall’s Waterstones on Saturday, February 2.

“I believe Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff branches of Waterstones are also keen to do signing events with us over the coming months,” Mr Perree said. “I think we're going to be busy this year.”

The Great Raft Race, which tells the story of undersea creatures Eel and Ock and a madcap race, is one of a growing list of titles from Plymouth’s Ghostly Publishing.

Company boss Neil Trigger said he is also launching a marketing service for writers on the Ghostly Publishing website.

“It’s for anyone interested in marketing their own book,” he said. “They don’t have to be published traditionally, but can have done it themselves.

“So I’m offering a free marketing tool for anyone with a book.

“It would be nice to see some people sign up and use it.”

“The book is actually called The Great Reef Race, not The Great Raft Race, and it was launched in Plymouth's New George Street Waterstones store.

Future plans include Bristol's Cribbs Causeway Waterstones as Temple Meads is a train station.

    Well done Leyland and Stuart.
