VIDEO: Plymouth diver Tom Daley becomes second city hero to beat Spanish
OLYMPIC hero Tom Daley has been celebrating his latest success – in a schools Spanish competition.
The hardworking diver took part in a local speaking competition and impressed judges so much he scooped the top prize.
Delighted Tom told his 2.5 million Twitter fans of his success yesterday afternoon.
And he posted a short video talking about the competition on social networking site Keek.
The 18-year-old Plymouth College pupil will now go on to the Southern England finals of the competition.
But the night before he expressed his anxiety over the contest.
Mar 8, 2013 | I won my Spanish speaking competition!!! I'm through to the south England finals :D by TomDaley1994 on Keek.com
On Thursday evening he Tweeted: "I have a Spanish competition tomorrow :/
"I'm kind of nervous... I have to present it on stage with a slide show and everything! Aaaaah!"
But yesterday afternoon he updated fans saying: "I won my Spanish southwest speaking competition!! Next step is the southern finals!"
Fans were quick to send best wishes to Tom – many in Spanish.
One fan wrote: "non avevo dubbi! Congratulazioni", which means 'I had no doubt. Congratulations."
Another wrote: "Congratulations Tom!!! Mi chifla tu!! Mi Hablo un poco de espanol", meaning 'Tom congratulations! My crazy about you! I speak a little Spanish."

“Hahahah..I see all Tango Bois publicity team and his mother and the Herald staff no doubt are going through the comments and making sure all the negative ones are now showing RED Arrows!!!!..Its so funny and its so obvious..But whatever they do to try and put this NON HERO back into the Spotlight...they are wasting their time...Most people in Plymouth cant stand the sight of him...or his over hyped life...He and they cant seem to live without him being in the papers and all over Social Media sites...and the gay magazines who he loves to pose for...The rest of his Diving (Former) Team Mates ..male and female ..havent turned into media hungry ******...They tend to let their achievements speak for them..Didnt one of them 'out' him a few weeks ago?”

“Herald....Please!
Tom didn't defeat the Spanish. He won a Spanish speaking competition. And if it's the same one I entered (and won myself) when I was at school it's not open to people who speak that language as their native tongue.
Lazy, if not downright misleading journalism. Incidentally, as I won the same competition, am I a hero too? Hehehehe!”

“It makes my blood boil when this comic of a web site calls TD a hero....what about all the Marines in the city who have served in Afghan, what are they then?.They are the REAL hero`s and NOT TD
This might be another start of non TD stories, which i hope not.
If anyone is so much interested in what TD does, then follow his tweets he posts on twitter, and not here..... we the public want to read real news
PS Note to Editor.I can also speak, read and write two languages fluently,so if you what an exclusive email me and if the money is right i will talk to you ;-)”

“I think Toms agents or whoever, need to have a word with the Heralds editor and explain that people dont like the word " hero " being used so ridiculously . I am sure he is as embarrased as much us us are . It does no one any favours and its about time the Heralds young staff grew up .
I have seen a lot of negative comments towards him, and most seem to come from the way that this particular rag overhype him for their own good . Most dont have bad things to say about him.... but the way he is promoted by others .
A calming influence is needed and not one that thinks in terms of David Cassidy or Donny Osmond .”

“Can't Tom's trunks be housed in a glass case and put on display somewhere as a tourist attraction?”

“@olddogbreath. I couldnt put it better myself. I admire his diving and his dedication over the last few years but am uncomfortable with the publicity machine he appears to have associated himself with (agent???), but most of all I abhor the Herald's obsession with him. Let him get on with whatever he does but please dont make me continually have to look at it over my breakfast table. Good luck Tom but please rein in the publicity”

“I quite admire this young man, but this is a non story and I'm sure that he would not like the word hero to be used for his achievements. The word hero should be used sparingly and for those who present themselves for the preservation of others.”
