Plymouth drivers warned of black ice
MOTORISTS are being warned to expect black ice along a country lane used as a "rat run" by commuters.
A woman was taken to hospital by ambulance yesterday morning after her car overturned on the minor road between Tamerton Foliot and Roborough.
She was not seriously hurt but suffered a suspected shoulder injury after her vehicle skidded on black ice and came to a rest on its side at around 9am.
The accident closed Roborough Lane and Soper Hill as paramedics and two crews of firefighters from Crownhill and Camels Head went to the scene.

One fire crew member warned motorists to take extra care along the stretch, with temperatures set to remain low.
Water left on the road from last week's flooding was freezing and turning into black ice, he said.

Yes and they start with the main routes and work through to the less important routes, you know the ones most people use. So the chances of them getting around to gritting a single track country lane on the outskirts of Plymouth, which is doubtfully suitable for gritting lorries, is slim. You'll also probably find that this road is in the South Hams not Plymouth.
So if you want to stay safe ignore your favourite short cut that was built in the days of horse and carts and use a gritted main route.”

“It isn't the commuters that are a problem on Luke's lane. Nor the school run cars. Ever since Citylink moved to the Bellever industrial estate there are dozens of vans every hour racing like morons up & down that road. And those numbers added to the Parcelforce ones coming from the Roborough centre that were already using it before. There is even a sign at the beginning of the lane saying the road really isn't suitable for large vans like that. They have no regards for anyone, there isn't a single van that's got a proper driverside wingmirror left.”

“Hearald, global warming does not necessarily lead to a warmer climate. It melts the polar ice caps and brings cold seawater around the coast causing storms and lots more rain with stronger winds.”

“It would seem prudent when there is a chance of icy weather to stick to main routes that have been gritted even if it adds a little time to your journey. It is often the very beginning or end of a journey that is the riskiest part of a journey when we have icy weather, unless you live on a main route or choose to drive along un-gritted roads.”

“My freezer contains no ice despite the cold temperatures. Why can't the Highways Agency apply the same technology to our roads to keep them safe? They are just being lazy if you ask me.”
