Magistrates warned him their power to send him to jail for 12 months may not be enough. He was remanded in custody to be sentenced by a judge at Plymouth Crown Court.

Eoin McCarthy, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Kearney was drinking wine through the day at his partner's home in Whitleigh.

He added that "for some reason" Kearney took her car keys and drove away in her VW Golf Cabriolet at about 4pm.

Mr McCarthy said the Golf crashed into the back of a car waiting in traffic in Budshead Road.

The motorist then saw Kearney drive past her at speed.

He added a second driver spotted the Cabriolet being driven erratically at speed on the Crownhill flyover.

The court heard the motorist pulled over to avoid any accident.

Mr McCarthy said Kearney was involved in another minor collision.

He added he finally crashed into the rear of a Ford Fiesta in Church Hill, Eggbuckland, before driving past on the wrong side of the road.

Mr McCarthy said the Golf, which had run out of petrol, was left nearby after a drive of about three or four miles.

The court heard Kearney was arrested later at the home of a relative. He was found to have 54 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Mr McCarthy said the cost of putting right the damage to the cars was not known, but was thought to be less than £5,000.

The offences were all committed on bail. Kearney is awaiting sentence for a public order offence.

Julian Jefferson, for Kearney, said: "There is only one issue in his life and that is alcohol."

He added he had been under stress that day because of problems his partner was suffering.

Mr Jefferson urged magistrates to release Kearney on bail so he could be assessed by a probation officer.

But the bench remanded him in custody to be sentenced for all matters on March 8.

“This bloke is a joke and clearly a menace to society. The Government should make low lifes like this work unpaid until all costs are recovered - including the costs associated with the courts such as the Judge & Staffs wages, admin fees and importantly the costs of damage to those directly affected by this idiots drink driving.

All too often it is the same few causing so much disruption and heartache to the many who just wish to LEGALLY and legitamately get on with their lives.”

“Do not blame society or the system for his selfish actions, he has been purge to good people far too long, the damage to the cars can be resolved, but the amount of burglaries he has committed for drugs, booze has shattered lives through his own actions, this warrants a long time inside. I hope the judge will step up and give a sentence that the public will accept. And in his darkest moment I hope he reflects on the damage to those he burgled and to those he could of killed through his actions, someone could been without a brother, sister, daughter, son. Mother and father.”

I would judge from your defence of this complete SCUMBAG, that your the poor older woman that is his partner that's helping him to get his life back on track.
You mention that there are many issues to be understood!
    What are these?

Is it that poor Stephen is a victim of society and that the authorities have failed him and rebuffed him, what else can Julian Jefferson say that has not been said in previous THIS IS PLYMOUTH STORIES, regarding the Scum Bag.
You mention he is loving and caring. That's crazy when he steals his girlfriends car, hell if that's love please keep it.
You say we have all done something, yes speaking about what Scum he really is.
He mixes with the rasta girl and her stumpy overweight boyfriend that along with others beat up a local alcoholic about him stealing £120.00. The very same alcoholic that when he finds a purse hands it in, one that will help any member in the street. However Mr Scumbag Kearney and crew beat him to a pulp, when someone normal steps into help, you threaten to stab him, then blow his cars up, you can't find his so you blow his disabled mums up instead, really nice guy.
Again this great guy robs a genuine lady of her purse while in church.
He then goes around on a crime spree late at night robbing what he can and then sleeping by day. He threatens to rape his victims partner unless they back off, put bullets in people's head.

And YOU ITALIARDT have the bast**d cheek to defend him saying its the systems fault.
Sadly the system does to much to help this Scum.
Let the Scum DIE, even a lethal injection is too good for him.
Kearney your in prison costing us money, do us a favour take your Valium and do us all a favour. I'll be happy to pay for them.
You are a BULLY to the infirm and inferior but to those above you a COWARD and a GRASS.”

“Oh, just for the record I AM a taxpayer! The only reason you are now paying your full rent is because YOU were SCAMMING council tax who found out YOU had savings and you were caught out! Please don't portray yourself as an innocent victim, we all know what you are like!”
