Plymouth protest sparked by plan for a 'bedroom tax'
PROTESTS about the implementation of the Government's so-called 'bedroom tax' were due to be held today.
Concern has mounted in the past few weeks about the effect the tax will have upon low-income families, separated parents and the disabled. A Plymouth protest is due to start at the Sundial at 1pm.
Other protests are expected to take place all over the country.
Unite say the tax could hit about 650,000 people.

Since the announcement the Government has backed down on certain aspects, including applying the rules to military families.
Under the changes, foster carers would also be exempted from the controversial plans which will see housing benefit cut for people in social housing with spare bedrooms.
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has also made clear that councils can exempt households with severely disabled children.
Len McCluskey, from Unite, said: "The strength of feeling among communities about this senseless and cruel policy is palpable.
"Unite is defiantly proud to be helping people come together to defend their homes and those of their friends and neighbours, too.
"The Government has got this very, very wrong. This is no way to go about solving the housing crisis."
Fathers 4 Justice are expected to join the Plymouth protest.
A spokesman for the Plymouth group said: "Non-resident fathers who have a spare room are particularly badly affected by the bedroom tax. The courts insist that fathers who want to maintain overnight contact with their children must have a spare bedroom in order for them to grant access.
"Therefore this new legislation will punish fathers who are simply doing as they are told by the courts. It is a Catch-22 situation but in simple terms, there are no winners."

“For anyone interested:
there will be a public meeting on Tuesday at 19:00 in the Plymouth Social Club (Tavistock Place, behind the central library) which will be discussing plans for the second static demonstration against the bedroom tax. The implications of the changes to council tax benefit will also be discussed with a view to organising a lobby of the council.
All are welcome”

“A great move, and I hope it's only the start, on cutting the unnecessary burden on the country. I don't care about the rich, I'm not bitter about people who pay more tax and who probably contribute more to the country than those in subsidised housing.
Go for it, Dave. At least you've got the strength to do something which, although unpopular with the benefits grabbers, is the most sensible course of action.”

“I don't think Meany of the people winging voted at all, they cant be bothered, so really that is there own fault is it not?
30% of the UK population voted in the last election the majority could not be bothered.
If the other 70% looked at ALL the party's manifestos and what the parties stood for and voted say for example UKIP then we would have A different house of commons and maybe we would not be in this mess, so yes in the first instance I do blame the NON voters.
However, I have been on the breadline and I have had less than a lot of people, honest people need help, but there is a lot of people and people I know personally who are better off than me and they are on befits, I am self employed and have 2 kids. They mone and grown I get on with it and work 65hrs per week for less than them. so you can see why I feel this way can you not?
.
But yes I do blame the non voters 100% for the mass they have got us into by letting the Torys in.”

“I don't think you'll find many people on the receiving end voted Tory, jtme1. Do you seriously want tent shanties to spring up all over Britain? India created a welfare system this year; we're dismantling ours. Third World, here we come - are you proud of that?”

“Call it what you will, the fact is ordinary working people, the poor, disabled, and now even the middle class are under attack from the nasty party who, whilst attacking the latter are quite happy to watch as some in our society take six figure salarys and award themselves bonnuses of multi million pounds, whilst our elderly die from hypothermia, unable as they are to afford to heat their homes.
ALL IN IT TOGETHER ARE WE. LOL.”
