He said: "As far as we can see there are three potential buyers. There are private hoteliers who would like to return it to what it was or turn it into a boutique hotel.

"Another option would be coach tour operators, and the third option, subject to consent, would be private accommodation, either houses or apartments.

"It is going to appeal to different sorts of people, which is great."

Mr Page said he had already received "a handful" of offers and expects many more to come.

The hotel's former owner, Iranian-born Joseph Louei, said: "It is very sad for me. I did everything I could but I am feeling very bad at the moment.

"I would love to see it stay as a hotel. I tried to do a deal but the bank just didn't want to know. The council did not help as the rates were so high. It is just such a shame."

Mr Louei, who moved away from Plymouth after he lost control of the business, added: "I have fond memories of it. It was my dream. It was the fruits of my life. I worked 24/7 for it. I put everything I had into it for 12 years.

"It's very sad for me but also for the whole of the city."

“Commiserations to Joseph Louie, a hard working character and a pleasure to know, from time to time I used to hot desk in the lounge. The service was great, towards the end I got a sixth sense that all was not right and was confirmed when the Hotel closed.”

“Even the hotel inspectors couldn't save it!”
