Plymouth's Derriford Hospital forced to cancel operations
DERRIFORD Hospital has been forced to cancel some operations due to a shortage of beds and rising admissions.
Earlier this week The Herald reported that the hospital is on “black alert”, and yesterday hospital bosses admitted they are under “extreme pressure”.
A spokesman said: “Derriford Hospital continues to be under extreme pressure from the volume of medical admissions and higher than expected number of ambulance transfers into our emergency department, combined with local bed demand remaining higher than expected for this time of year.
“Our staff are working extremely hard to maintain high levels of care for our patients and we are being well supported by our colleagues in the local health community and the ambulance service.

“Regrettably it has been necessary to cancel some operations and we are sorry to those patients who have been affected by this unprecedented demand on our services.
“We would again like to thank our staff for their efforts and also extend that thanks to our patients for their understanding during this time.
“We are monitoring the situation very closely and continue to work with our colleagues in the wider healthcare community to try and reduce the pressure we are currently experiencing.”
Nobody from the hospital was able to reveal how many operations have so far been cancelled.
