They include stores in Birmingham, Croydon, Edinburgh, Manchester and Glasgow - but the shop in Drake Circus will stay open for the time being.

Joint administrator Nick Edwards said:  "As part of our ongoing review of HMV's financial position, we have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss-making stores for closure.

"This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business' future as a going concern.

"We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period.

"All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business."

“The poor Plymouth store has been through a lot. First it was Virgin Megastore, then Zavvi, then HMV and their jobs are still on the line.
It would be a shame not to have at least one shop like this in the city centre.”

“It's sad that people are loosing thier jobs but don't the vast majority of people who buy CD's DVD's etc buy them off the internet? With iTunes you have it there instantly. That's what it's all about now.... Instant gratification!”
