Plymouth school governor retires after 20 years of service
A SCHOOL governor who served for more than 20 years at two city primary schools has retired.
Mary McGill, from Peverell, has retired from Ford Primary School after working as a clerk for the governors, a governor and a chair of governors for 16 years.
Mary said: "I've loved working with these people. I've just loved every minute of it. It's been so much fun you wouldn't believe."
Mary started her service as a school governor at Manadon Vale Primary School in 1988 before the 71-year-old moved to Ford Primary School in 1992.

The mum of one was also on the Steer ing Committee for the Devon Association of Governors, then a committee member, before she became a vice chairman.
When Plymouth became a unitary authority she then dedicated her efforts to work for the Plymouth Association of Governors.
Along with her colleagues at the Devon Association of Governors, Mary also helped to set up the Teacher Training Awards and became a judge for the South West region.
During Mary's time at Ford Primary School she ran a chess club and held one assembly a month.
"From the very start in Spring 1992 I listened to children in the reception class reading and stayed with them until they left. I spent six years with them and got to know them well; that's one of my favourite parts of those 20 years," she said.
Mary was married to John for 15 years before he passed away and she has one daughter, Moira, who is 30.
Now Mary is looking forward to spending more time in the garden.
During the past 20 years Mary has seen education change and develop, but she says the important parts of the job have stayed the same.
"Education faces the same problems as it did back then. The children come in with so much to learn and schools do their best to captivate their imaginations and do their very best with them.
"I have nothing but admiration for teachers and I have been ever so lucky to have met and worked with so many people and delightful children," she said.
