Plymouth schoolgirl's tears as she tells court she was raped

A SCHOOLGIRL sobbed as she told police of her terror at being allegedly raped by a teenager.

The youngster constantly wiped the tears from her eyes during a recording of an interview she gave police, which was shown to a jury at Plymouth Crown Court.

Brenan Grenney, aged 19, of Embankment Road, is on trial accused of raping the girl more than 18 months ago.

He denies rape but has pleaded guilty to the alternative charge of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said on the recording that she was "constantly screaming no" as Grenney made sexual advances on August 16, 2011.

She said Grenney had locked the door of the city home where they were alone on the night of the annual fireworks championships.

The girl said that Grenney held his arm over her mouth and hit her once during a half-hour ordeal.

She added: "I was absolutely terrified. I did not know what he was going to do next. I just sat on the edge of the bed afterwards crying."

The girl said: "He told me not to tell anyone. He had this really scary look on his face, like if I told someone he could have hurt me some more."

Cross-examined by Grenney's barrister Jo Martin over a live videolink, she insisted that she had nothing to drink that evening.

Asked why she did not unlock the door and leave while Grenney briefly left the room, the girl said: "I was scared, I froze on the spot."

Miss Martin asked: "Did you consent to sex?"

The girl replied: "No."

Llewellyn Sellick, opening the case for the Crown Prosecution Service, said earlier that Grenney had told police in interview that he could not remember anything for three to four hours.

He said he remembered drinking and smoking cannabis in a park with some friends and the next thing he recalled was waking up in the home where the attack was alleged to have happened.
