Plymouth youngsters receive their Duke of Edinburgh awards

HUNDREDS of youngsters from across Plymouth received their Duke of Edinburgh's award at a special presentation evening hosted at Plymouth Guildhall, writes Bryony Drewett. Over 200 young people aged 14 to 24 were congratulated on Monday at a night of celebration hosted by the Plymouth DofE Committee.

They were presented their awards in front of an audience packed with proud parents, carers and professionals working with young people from across the city.

Speakers on the night included the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Cllr Michael Wright and Oli Milroy a local young adventurer and Olympic Torch Bearer.

To achieve a DofE Award, participants choose their own programme which must include regular participation in three sections: volunteering, physical and skills. A quarter of the Award is the expedition section which encourages journeying and can be completed by foot, bicycle or kayak.

There are three levels of the award: gold, silver and bronze with each requiring a more sustained level commitment and involvement.

Plymouth City council supports over 400 young people in schools and youth groups to achieve their DofE Awards, along with the generous help and support of many dedicated volunteers.
