PLYMSTOCK School's Victoria Weir was Devon's only winner at the South West Schools' Cross Country Championships, which were held at Exeter Arena.

The 13-year-old triumphed in a competitive junior girls race.

The City of Plymouth athlete managed to hold off Dorset's Bridget Dence by two seconds.

The victory made up for Weir having to settle for second last year and it will give her confidence ahead of next month's English Schools' Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Somerset.

Weir certainly has plenty of competition within Plymouth and Devon to push her.

Devon's junior girls dominated the South West Championships with four runners in the top seven and five in the top 12.

Plymouth College's Emily Ackford finished fourth, with school team-mate Poppy Tank sixth.

Devonport High School's Emily Attfield came 12th.

It was nearly a double success for the Weir family, as Victoria's older brother David came second in the intermediate boys' race.

The Plymstock pupil finished just 12 seconds behind Wiltshire's Alex Carter.

There was a silver medal for Ivybridge Community College's Will Battershill in the junior boys' race.

He was just eight seconds behind Somerset's Sam Sommerville.

Another Ivybridge pupil, Billy Craske, also won a silver medal.

He could not have been closer to victory in the minor boys' event, finishing just one second behind Wiltshire's Robert Howarth.

Craske helped Devon to team victory in the race.

Devon's other individual medal winner came in the senior girls' event where Exeter's Rosie Cahmberlain took bronze.

However, Ivybridge's Jess Harvey just missed out on a medal in that race, finishing fifth.
