NEWLY-promoted Plymstock batsman Dominic Wood has been named Devon Cricket League player of the year for 2011.

But the talented Wood will be absent from the Dean Cross-based outfit when they tackle the A Division next season.

He is going to be playing his cricket in London this season.

Astonishingly, Wood was handed his accolade after spending a season with a B Division team.

He beat off other candidates for the award, including star performers in the A and Premier Divisions.

Wood racked up 877 runs at an average of 54.81 which included three tons and three 50s. His consistent run scoring was one of the main reasons Plymstock were able to haul themselves out of the B Division and into the A.

Wood, also recognised as a skilled fielder, holds the all-time B Division record for scoring, a 176 hit in 2010.

His dedication to Plymstock's promotion is illustrated by him turning out for the team against Clyst St George when he was suffering from food poisoning – and scored 47.

First team captain Dave Orchard said: "Domo has been our most consistent batter for several seasons now. The runs he's got have really helped us get to where we are. I don't think you could ask for any more in a player, especially a batsman.

"He's consistent, has a great attitude, always calm under pressure and always got our innings off to a great start and at a great tempo."

"I don't think there's a better form of recognition out there than the Devon League Player of the Year and I don't think anybody deserves it more."

Orchard added: "Unfortunately, Dom's moved to London this winter and will be playing his cricket up there.

"On behalf of the club and all his teammates I'd like to say a big thank you to all he's done over his time at Plymstock and wish him all the best for the future."

Wood said he didn't think he was in the running to get the award.

He said: "When you look at some of the other names that have won this in the past, I'm truly flattered to be mentioned in the same breath."

Plymstock are looking for new players. Nets will run from 8.15pm-10pm at Plymstock School from Wednesday, February 15.
