YOUNGSTERS from Plymstock School have been shown how to follow in the footsteps of local heroine Heather Knight.

Their lesson came from England's Caroline Atkins, who was working with students on the Chance to Shine Scheme, set up to encourage females to take part in the game.

Knight, a former Plymstock School pupil, started her cricketing career with her local team, then progressed through the ranks to the full England side.

Atkins, a member of England's world cup-winning side, worked with more than 100 girls from Plymstock School and other feeder primary schools, including Oreston Academy.

The youngsters took part in coaching drills, skills and games aimed at encouraging girls to take up the sport.

Mark Taylor, Plymstock's head of PE, said: "It is always wonderful to have high-quality performers who have performed brilliantly on the world stage into our school.

"It is great for the girls to see and work with an incredible ambassador and role model.

"To be able to build on the success of Heather Knight, an ex student who also plays for England, should inspire many girls into cricket or competitive sport."
