POLICE are stepping up patrols outside Plymouth primary schools to drive home the message to parents about safe parking on the school run.

The ‘School Safe’ operation will see officers and PCSOs from Plymouth conducting high-visibility patrols outside five primary schools in the mornings and afternoons until the end of January.

The aim is to educate parents about safe and legal parking in and around schools, and follows concerns raised by local residents about children’s safety.

PC Debbie Benwell, who organised the operation, said: “We are constantly being told by residents in the area of their concerns at the manner of parking around the school.

“Most are concerned that a child will be hurt or in the worst case scenario receive a fatal injury.

“The problem tends to get worse during the winter months when the weather is bad and the light is low.

“Parents use their vehicles more frequently and attempt to park as close to the school gates as possible.”

The team will visit each school at least twice a week for the next few weeks and enforcement measures will be used in the future if the problems persist.

The schools involved are Mayflower Primary School, Montpelier Primary School, Pennycross Primary School, Weston Mill Primary School and Hyde Park Primary School.

“We have contacted each school to make them aware of the operation and encouraged them to inform parents of the actions we are taking,” added

PC Benwell.

“This operation will also give us a good opportunity to interact with the children, parents and schools.”

Councillor Nicky Williams, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This sounds like an excellent initiative that will help highlight the dangers of parking illegally in and around schools to parents and carers dropping off and picking up their children.

“I think I speak for all the schools involved when I say that the safety and wellbeing of children is top priority, so efforts by the police to educate motorists are very much appreciated.”

“As a disabled parent, (I broke my neck & back), getting my children children to school is a nightmare. There are 5 disabled spaces in the staff car park for parents and only one other disabled parent at the school. Most mornings and afternoons neither myself or the other disabled parent can get into a space, because able bodied parent cannot be bothered to use a pub car park less than 400 metres from the school, which they are allowed to use.
I would love to be able to walk my kids to school.,(I'd love to be able to walk my kids anywhere)! The school newsletter is forever asking parents not to use the disabled bays. I have no choice but to get to school 30 minutes early, each morning, (then sit in the car until school opens), and afternoon in order to get a space. If I cannot get there early, I have to drop my kids off late. Dispite constant requests by the school not to use the disabled bays, unless you are disabled, most people just don't give a flying ++++!! Rant Over!!!”

“shame they cant be bothered to sort out the idiots outside of goosewell school everyday when i pick my son up.reported many times to headmaster and even pictures taken and nothing.
you have certain parents driving with no seatbelts on inc their children!!! to the ones that drive along the pavement to get past someone instead of waiting then the taxifirst drivers that park constantly on the yellow zig zag lines/pavement whilst waiting for kids and when asked to move you get sworn at in a nice foreign tone and window shut on you.
all reported and sod all done.what will it take for these lazy, selfish drivers to think.....
oh thats right a child being knocked down and killed.then things will change.”

“Every time i pick my lil girl up from school, car after car parked on the 'No Parkin At Any Time'. you would think they would know better, picking up kids of their own.
All Schools Need some on on watch every day, that can give fines.”

I think youll find thats not quite true, you could always try walking !

Thats how I got to school some 30 years ago kids and parents have got lazy hence why this problem is occuring more this day and age.”

“@Pilly40 - To sum what you're saying, if there is inadequate parking to somewhere I want to go does that mean I can just park where ever and how ever I want? stuff everyone else?? heaven forbid the parents park correctly and safely and have to walk an extra 2mins!
Your comment makes you sound exactly the type of person the police are targeting.”

“Philly40 parents like everybody else have a responsibility when in a car to park legally and safely and if they can't do that they should be charged. If only they realised they are putting the lives of their own children at risk as well as others by their selfish acts. There should be a wide exclusion zone outside every school and for a few weeks every school would be visited and anyone parked in that zone heavily fined. From what I have seen that would generate enough income to more than pay the wages of the officers involved and it just might make a few parents end their lazy selfish ways.”

If only they realised they are putting the li9ves of their children as well as otrhers at risk by parking the way they do. There should be a large exclusion zone outside every school and for the first few weeks every school in turn would be visited and anyone inside the zone to get a hefty fine. From what I have seen that would generate enough income to more than pay the wages of the officers involved and in time just might see some of these lazy irresponsible parents see sense. Why park anyway why don't they just drop off the kids and drive on?”
