INTREPID campaigner Pothole Pete has been out and about in Plympton on his mission to improve the city's roads.

The Herald's own pothole crusader checked out craters in Longcause Road and Merafield Road on Monday.

A Plymouth City Council spokeswoman said: "A number of potholes in Longcause Road and Merafield Road were repaired on January 5 following reports to our Watchman team. No further reports have been received, but we will re-visit the roads to carry out a further inspection.

"Plymouth Transport and Highways carry out regular inspections of the city's roads but potholes can develop very quickly, particularly following periods of prolonged wet weather, so reports from members of the public are a great help to us.

"The fact is our roads are getting to a third world countrys state by the day "

    It is third world here.

The roads in a number of third world countries are superior to the roads here!”

“I would go further . If 5 years ago we saw a pothole it would be regarded as a one off . A bit of wear and tear to be expected and no worries -a few days it would be gone .
Now the expectations are there holes absolutely everywhere and its getting worse - a lot worse .
And as a car driver who pays a lot of tax in one way or another to use it .... dont fob me off with excuses .”

“The fact is our roads are getting to a third world countrys state by the day and they are doing nothing about it . The last time we saw any resurfacing was before the cameras were expected for the olympics on certain roads to make it look good - and there was a lot of it suddenly .
I cant work it out,its as if they really want it to be this way as to slow traffic down to a 5 mph limit .
I for one spend more time looking to save my car from damage than looking ahead . It has got so bad everywhere in Plymouth . And especialy in the last 3 or 4 years . Any coincidence on the contractors appointed to "do a better job and still save money " ? I dont know .... but it surely cannot go on like this .”

“With limited funds and the fact that the council employ contractors to 'maintain' the roads it is doubtful that we would be happy allowing a profit making organisation to have carte blanche access to our money.
There has to be some control but sadly, PCC don't have it. They seem to have abdicated all responsibility for the upkeep of Plymouth.”

“As a rider of a large motorcycle I am aware of the state of the local roads and the potholes all of us road users have to endure. On a recent report about P.C.C's budget for the year it is clear that there is less money going around (as usual). P.C.C have stated that the damage being done to the road surface is the amount of water we have had as of late. I cannot disagree with this, but hang on - why is this water collecting like this?????? Hmm you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work this one out!!
Years ago we used to watch the vehicles clearing the drains with a big nozzle after leaf fall especially...Now you will not see them very often, and when you do its not at the right time of the year. Come on P.C.C you know where the problem lies, with you.
Quote: We will re-visit the roads to carry out a further inspection.
Do you mean all the roads?, or are you just going to wait for an accident to happen before the problem is again realised.
Three easy steps that will cure this problem:
    1. Unblock all the drains and keep them unblocked (maintainance)
    2. When a pothole is found fill it in with correct methods and materials...(not cheap and quick fix)
    3. Don't wait until the public has an accident and report a pothole..get out there and find them yourself and fix them properly.
If you can't find the money to do so then do yor jobs and fight for it. Thats what you were voted in to do, not to make things worse.
The trouble is when a road surface is laid down it has a 15 year lifespan until it needs attention.
Some of the roads we are talking about have been down for alot longer than that and they r full of "waiting to happen accident" potholes.

P.S Alot of us live in the back streets and not on the main roads where most of the roadwork repair work is done. These roads are in an appauling state and very dangerous. But I think its seems to be an "Out of sight out of mind" mentality.
Come and have a look at the potholes in these places.

If I come off with one of these deathtraps you will surely get the bill...By the way there is a dangerous set on the junction of Paradise Road and the College (Kings College side). Needs immediate attention. I will be reporting it.

    Happy Repairing!!”

"Why don't they just have a team that goes out, finds pot holes, does a quick assessment and then fills them there and then without all the red tape?"

That takes initiative and common sense not one hour chat breaks in a carpark!”

“Perhaps this year the Herald instead of worrying what Pasties Argyle are selling, will start a Decent campaign to get Plymouth's roads into some sort of decent surface, rather than the current spine jarring state they are in now and rapidly deteriorating...
    what about car stickers.
"Visit Plymouth" the best 3rd world roads in the UK.

“The thing I find stupid is the council probably wait for a complaint, then send someone out to look at it then they spray markings on it and then they probably have a meeting about what action they take and plan dates etc. then go out and fill it and all this takes weeks.

Why don't they just have a team that goes out, finds pot holes, does a quick assessment and then fills them there and then without all the red tape?”
