A PUBLIC consultation is to be carried out on a potential major junction improvement off the A38 near Plympton and Langage.

Four options to upgrade the Deep Lane Junction will be considered during the consultation, which will run until Friday, December 11. The feedback from the exercise will be one factor used to inform the selection of the junction option to be included in a Major Scheme Bid which is needed to secure government funding.

Plymouth City Council is leading the bid, working with Devon County Council and the Highways Agency.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "This consultation exercise is an opportunity for local residents and businesses to comment on the four different options that are being put forward for this junction. With important development in this area proposed over the coming years, it's important that this junction is designed correctly to meet future demand for public transport and car access."

The junction improvement is part of the wider Eastern Corridor project which aims to provide a new route for buses from the city centre to the proposed Sherford New Community and Langage, via a proposed park and ride at Deep Lane.

The proposed improvements are needed to provide access from the A38 to new developments in the area, including 5,500 homes at Sherford, 1,650 homes at Plymstock Quarry and the possible extension of Langage Energy Park.

Option one involves the provision of a new four lane roundabout junction at Deep Lane with new slip roads on and off the A38 and a new access road to the south of Langage.

Option two would provide a second bridge across the A38 at Deep Lane Junction together with the new road in option one and the existing slip-road arrangement to and from the A38.

The third option would provide an additional two lane bridge over the A38 and different slip road arrangements. In addition, this proposal improves the Voss Farm Junction to the east to provide an alternative access to Langage.

Option four is similar to option three because it provides some improvements to both Deep Lane and Voss Farm. However, it retains the existing one bridge and slip road layout at Deep Lane and provides an off slip at Voss Farm.

The consultation events will be held from 12.30pm to 6.30pm on the following days:

Monday, November 23, at Ivybridge Watermark Centre.

Tuesday, November 24, at Eastern Wood Road, Langage Energy Park.

Thursday, November 26, at Chaddlewood Farm Community Centre.

Friday, November 27, at Elburton Village Hall.

A leaflet and questionnaire will be sent out to local residents and businesses and a questionnaire will also be available on line at www.devon.gov.uk

“there is a very easy, very quick and very cheap fix for this road junction; take away the traffic lights, put it back how it used to be and then simply "chevron - off" the inside lanes on both the up and down carriageways of the A38 before and after the junctions at deep lane - traffic merging onto the A38 from plympton can do so safely as there will be nobody in the now chevronned off inside lane, and any queing to leave the A38 will now take place in the specifically designated lane, thus meaning that nobody should (should!) run into the back of stationary traffic.
Something similar has already been operating successfully for quite some tlime at the exeter junction near where the A38 becomes the M5. seemples !”

“Before blaming Plymouth why not read the artical. The junction in question is not in Plymouth and was designed, built and is maintained by Devon County Council. So the money is there's and could not be spent in Plymouth anyway!”

“As mentioned before - could anyone explain why there is no right turn from the eastbound carriageway towards Plymstock anymore (that used to be working fine didn't it?) and why the turn from Deep Lane onto the westbound carriageway is always coned partially coned off?”

“That is pretty much what I came in here to say, Sorry Boss. How much money did they waste constucting a road layout that simply creates congestion? This money could have been better spent repairing the numerous roads around Plymouth which seem to be breaking up and crumbling away. No doubt these will be overlooked in favour of even more mini roundabouts and traffic lights at random, inappropriate locations. Probably sometime around Feb/March to ensure departmental budgets are justified!”
