HARDY primary pupils braved the rain to carry out a traffic survey outside the school gates.

Lipson Vale Primary School has been monitoring the number of vehicles using Bernice Terrace for around a decade.

Youngsters take traffic-counts three times a year to see if plans to drive down unnecessary car journeys are working.

Some of the school's current crop of youngsters armed themselves with an umbrella to take a survey of vehicles.

"Despite the fact it was raining, the count was surprisingly low," said Lipson Vale's Pam Redgwell.

"Normally it's pandemonium out there."

But she added: "We do know from our surveys that more of our pupils walk to school nowadays, or their parents park further away from the entrance."

Police speed guns have been used by children during previous traffic counts at the primary.

“the head teacher needs to be taken to task by the education department for allowing children to go on the streets in the rain. this task could have been done at any time. when the children are ill and off school lets hope the parents are not taken to court.”

“I don't know where they get their figures but as a resident of Bernice Terrace I know for a fact that traffic flow has increased dramatically and illegal parking is rife during the "school runs".
In fact one afternoon this week a fire tender was unable to reach a car fire for some time due to vehicles obstructing the corner opposite the junction of Bernice Terrace and Bernice Close This corner should have yellow lines but even then most people would ignore them. Parking division camera cars are supposed to patrol during school run tmes but the only times we ever seen them have been before or after peak periods. Residents have in the past at "Have your Say meetings" asked for figures on the number of tickets issued but these figures have never been given. The schools Lipson comp and Lipson primary have staggered finishing times but the comp finish first so by the time parents, students and teachers arrive at the primary school they are also finishing and hence the reason we have on most days a "GRIDLOCK" situation in the terrace.”
